Simple Keys to Happiness and Well-being

In our fast-paced society today, many of us spend a large part of our life simply shuttling between work and home. Our health, relationships and sense of well-being inevitably become affected in one way or another. In the long run, how do we ensure that our well-being and happiness are not compromised? We show you some useful tips here.

1.    Slow Down and Take Stock

We often have the tendency to think that we will be happy when we get our next dream car, new laptop, i-phone, but just when we have attained them, another newer model arrives in the market, and we make it our next mission to get them. Motivated by such greed, is it any wonder that we are seldom truly happy?

Instead of getting lost in this often endless pursuit of material gain, why don’t we consider remaining in the real joy of contentment? If we were to just slow down our lives a little and take stock of the things and people around us, we would realize that there can be many areas in our lives that we can be thankful for. Even in our down times, there is often hope. When we learn to appreciate what we have now, we learn to stay joyful and contented.

2.    Discover your Passion

Have you ever done something and realized that you could go on in it forever? Or that you enjoyed the activity so much that time passed by in a flash? That could very well be your passion that fascinates and invigorates you, making you feel alive and happy whenever you engage in it. To one, it could be the pure joy of dancing, and to another, it could be the satisfaction of completing a marathon. If you’re not sure if you have a passion, try picking up something new today. You’ll never know when you’ll stumble upon something you thoroughly enjoy and even excel in!

3.    Seek a Work-life Balance

Our pace of life can get potentially hectic and stressful when work starts to pile up. It is then little surprise that we are often haunted by the ‘fatigue monster’ and become more susceptible to ailments such as migraines, irritability and in worse cases, depression and anxiety.

With such ailments on the rise, it is fundamental that we actively seek a balance between work and leisure, so as to ensure that our physical and mental well-being, which are key to our sense of happiness, are not compromised. Working women may be interested to check out the Amore Women’s Day Out, a collaboration between the Singapore Sports Council and Amore Women’s Fitness, a program launched since 2002 to encourage working women to lead a fun and sporting lifestyle. Given the demanding work schedules for many of us nowadays, it can be difficult to take time out to de-stress, exercise or simply reconnect with our loved ones. However, if we make an effort to do so regularly, the rewards we reap are endless. Not only are we healthier and happier, the people around us also benefit from what we can give to them as a result of our increased energy, vitality and health.
