1. Let there be light!
The benefits of eco-friendly light bulbs include energy reduction of approximately 75-80% and a longer bulb life. Although they cost more at first than the average light bulb, the energy savings will more than likely make up for the initial investment.
2. Use energy-efficient appliances.
Saving energy also saves money. By using our existing appliances more efficiently, you can also extend the working life of the appliances.
3. Turn off the power switch.
Switching off an electrical appliance with a remote control merely puts it on standby and energy is still being consumed. Any appliance that is not in use should have its main power switched off.
4. Fit aerators to taps.
If your taps have a screw thread at their outlet, you can fit aerators that mix water with air and give you a fuller flow for less water. If you are buying new taps, ensure that they come with aerators fitted.
5. Clean early and often.
Tackle stains when they're fresh and you'll use fewer chemicals and less elbow grease. Washing as you go also means you won't have to spend as much time or money on major cleaning.
6. Use natural, non-toxic detergents and toiletries.
Try out the gentler alternatives available in your local health food store and see which ones you like. This might take a bit of adjustment, so don't be surprised if they don't look, smell or foam in the same way. They will still do a good job.
7. Use natural paints and oils.
These may cost you a bit more than the petroleum-based standard products, but you won't breathe in any nasty chemicals and they won’t leave a trail of toxic waste behind them.
8. Open those windows.
Try to limit the time which you run the heater or air-conditioning. Open a window for natural ventilation, especially when you are cleaning.
9. Use a smart meter.
A smart meter is a clever little device that can break down the energy consumption of every appliance in the house, and give you your energy usage in real-time. Use it to help you ascertain which appliances are consuming too much energy, and where you can cut down.
10. Reduce, reuse and recycle.
Certain items such as plastic objects take a very long time, perhaps around 100 years or more to break down. Some items never decompose. Now that you know this, a safer and wiser act is to use your own shopping bag. Whether it is reducing your usage of bottled water, recycling the used plastic bottle, or refilling the bottle, you’re doing your own part in making a big difference to our environment.
Whatever you do, don't try to do everything at once. If you simply take one small measure at a time, your home will gradually be transformed into an eco-friendly one for the long term. |
