Singapore Flyer: First Light Festival
24th July 2010
Experience a New Dawn Like Never Before
A new event that celebrates a new Singapore of the 21th century, will take flight for the first time ever at the Singapore Flyer. Organised by The Arts House in partnership with the Singapore Flyer, this arts and culture event named “First Light” will take place at the break of dawn, celebrating a cosmopolitan and culturally vibrant Singapore.
First Light is an invitation to all Singapore citizens new and local to come together to celebrate our home, our diversity, and the theme, one people, one country as well. As the name implies, the events uses the symbolism of the break of dawn- first light- as a call to welcome and celebrate Singapore’s multi-ethnicity and inclusiveness. The festival seeks also to evoke a sense of pride for the nation and the land, especially for new citizens. It also seeks to bring together different communities and promote friendship across the boundaries of race, language, religion, culture and nationality.
As Mr William Phuan, Director, Arts Development, The Art House says: In essence, First Light celebrates the new Singapore of the 21st century: a Singapore that has evolved from its diversity being traditionally defined in communal terms to one that is defined by its internationalism and cosmopolitanism.”
“The festival supports the national priority of integration, as we recognise that the socio-cultural fabric of Singapore is evolving. Through First Light, we hope to help build closer cohesiveness and foster stronger intercultural ties.”
The First Light event comprises of five core component events which aim to encourage quality communal participation and sharing, and will build up and culminate in the singular moment of dawn. 3500 free tickets will be given out and participants will witness the Singapore’s cityscape transform from night to day at the break of dawn.
First Light is held in conjunction with the Orange Ribbon Celebrations (ORC) , which is a month-long celebration of racial harmony in July 2010 along the theme, Friendship Without Borders.
